Ithaka - TEDx University Of Crete
The Journey Was Always the Point
Project Overview
TEDxUniversityOfCrete needed more than a title card. The theme "Ithaka" is rooted in the Cavafy poem of the same name, the idea that the journey itself shapes who we are, not the arrival. They needed a concept video that could carry that weight emotionally and symbolically.
The challenge was translating a philosophical idea into a visual narrative without reducing it to the obvious. The concept had to feel timeless, open, and Cretan in spirit.
The Concept
The sea turtle became the protagonist. Not because it is an obvious symbol, but because it moves through the ocean exactly the way Odysseus moved through life without a fixed map, trusting instinct, carried by currents it cannot always control.
The turtle does not know where it is going. It trusts the sea. That is the entire thesis of Ithaka in a single image.
The ocean currents parallel the flow of time and circumstance. The storm scenes are not metaphors for failure they map to Odysseus encountering his monsters. Obstacles that are part of the journey, not interruptions to it.
The narrative never ends with arrival. The sea simply calms. The turtle continues. That ambiguity is intentional.

Storyboard
Six scenes. No dialogue. The entire concept communicated through movement, light, and water.

Creative Decisions
Why a Turtle, Not a Ship
A ship is controlled by a crew with a destination in mind. A turtle has no crew and no chart. It drifts with intention. That distinction is the entire philosophy of Ithaka choosing a turtle shifts the metaphor from conquest to surrender, from control to trust.
No Destination Shown
The video never resolves with an arrival. The sea calms, but the journey continues. This mirrors the Cavafy poem directly Ithaka gives you the journey, not the island. Ending with arrival would have undermined the entire thesis of the theme.
The Storm as the Point
The storm scenes deliberately avoid framing the turtle as struggling. It moves through chaos, not against it. This maps to the Odyssey's monsters not as defeats, but as defining moments. Difficulty is what makes the journey worth the name.

Result
Official concept mapping video for TEDxUniversityOfCrete 2026, setting the visual and emotional tone for the entire event before a speaker walked on stage.
Creative contribution, not a commission. MKS Advertising was a silver sponsor of the event. This gave the work room to be genuinely ambitious rather than committee-approved, and that freedom shows in the final piece.
A concept that travels without translation. The sea turtle metaphor works across cultures and languages. The visual language needs no subtitles a deliberate choice for an event with international speakers from Stanford, NASA, and the European Research Council.
